The aim of this course is to introduce students to the Database Systems technology, and illustrate its use for extracting actionable knowledge from Maritime Data.

After completing the course, the students will be aware of the basic maritime monitoring systems, such as the widely used Automatic Identification System or AIS. Moreover, they will be familiar with the basic concepts of Database Management Systems. They will also be able to use database management systems for performing Big Maritime Data analytics.

Subjects

In the first section of the course, it will presented the basic maritime monitoring systems. These systems are based on observation, such as satellite remote sensing, or vessel reporting, such as the widely used Automatic Identification System or AIS. It will also presented a hybrid monitoring system, which aims to combine the benefits of observation and reporting, in order to fully support Maritime Situational Awareness.
In the second section of the course, it will presented some representative maritime databases, such as the databases of vessel tracking services. Furthermore, it will presented typical queries to maritime databases, that aim to extract actionable knowledge from Big Maritime Data. For instance, it will presented queries for complex maritime event recognition, such as the recognition of dangerous and suspicious vessel behavior.
In the third section of the course, it will be given an introduction to the Database Systems technology. Initially, it will presented the relational model and relational algebra. Then, it will presented how relational algebra may form the basis of maritime data analytics. The presentation will be based on concrete examples of maritime queries.
In the last section of this course, it will presented SQL, the typical language for Databases. More precisely, we will show how SQL may be used for querying a database, as well as how it may be used for modifying the contents of a database. To aid the presentation, we will employ concrete examples applied to real vessel movement data from the Automatic Identification System.
